How to recover DATA FROM CLICKING HARD DISK
This case study will guide you to recover data from a clicking Western Digital drive by our hard drive hardware repair tool. This patient drive keeps clicking while we try to access the service area. In the mean while, it can’t be detected correctly in the program. So we decide to take a hot swap in order to recover data.
Here is the basic info for the patient and donor drive.
Patient drive :
S/N : WCAM96394013
MDL : WD800BB-00JHC0
Firmware Version : 05.01C05
PCB Version : 2060-701292-000
Donor drive :
S/N : WCAM96377358
MDL : WD800BB-00JHC0
Firmware Version : 05.01C05
PCB Version : 2060-701292-000
As shown in the picture above, the patient drive can’t be detected correctly. However, it’s a typical malfunction for the Black I Western Digital drive. This malfunction is caused by a mismatch of the ROM content in PCB and the ATA overlay module on the platter. Besides, this drive keeps clicking after loaded from HDD that caused the module list can’t be accessed normally, so there should be something wrong with some other modules. In this condition, hot swap PCB seems like the best way to recover the data.
In order to access the data area correctly, the patient drive should be read by its original defect list.
So first of all, we need to :

Step 1. Connect the donor drive to our hard drive hardware repair tool.
- Power on and load form HDD.
- Turn to Other Operations Tab and then click Stop Motor.
- Wait till the motor is totally stopped and remove the screws and PCB carefully with power on, then connect the donor PCB to the patient drive. Attention that the drive status should keep ready during the whole procedure. Otherwise we need to repeat this step again.
Step 2 .Start the motor and backup key modules. (1st hot swap. Important for data recovery)
In order to access the data area correctly, the patient drive should be read by its original defect list.
So first of all, we need to :
- backup the module 31 (Primary defect list) and 32 (RBBList).
